Why Tammy Abraham is a doubt for Chelsea’s clash with Liverpool

Tuchel explains Tammy absence

Since the arrival of Thomas Tuchel at Chelsea the German coach has made a number of difficult selection decisions during his brief spell in charge so far. Particularly in the one of the three main strikers that are available to the former PSG manager.

Timo Werner, Olivier Giroud and Tammy Abraham have all been used by Tuchel but recently the latter has not been in favour. Tuchel was asked about the possible inclusion of Abraham for the match against Liverpool and explained why he had been reluctant to use him.

“He lacks a little bit of luck, Tammy, not only in games, but also in training,” said Tuchel. “And once the last touch comes back, and he’s fighting for it now, he will stay a player that we will push for.”

“This is my job to push him to his limits. We will not stop doing this in supporting him.”

Tuchel also mentioned that he has a slight injury which could keep him out of the match regardless of selection competition.

“Tammy has problems on his ankle,” he said.

Tuchel: Chelsea over internationals

One interesting part of the press conference was when the German coach spoke about how he manages players which have ambitions of playing at the European Championships.

Tuchel suggested that he tries to avoid considering these factors when it comes to team selection. Admitting that it is good for his players to have the ambitions on a personal level to achieve international status.

However, he feels that their job at Chelsea is what is most important and therefore tries not to look at their personal ambitions when selecting his teams.

“I’m very honest. Not at all. When you talk now about Euros, it is like ‘Oh yes, there are the Euros.’”

“I don’t want to be influenced by that. I know well that the players have personal interests and this is absolutely okay. I hope they fight for their personal interests. I really hope they give out their very best.”

“Their personal interest is to be on the pitch for Chelsea and hopefully be on the pitch for their national team. That shows their ambition and quality.”

“My job as manager of Chelsea, I cannot be influenced by a decision that has maybe an impact on the national coach’s decision or a player’s future with his national team.”

“To be very honest, I like to play them here and then they can all stay with me during in the summer. Relax on their vacations and then come for pre-season. That would be my personal choice, but this will not happen.”

“I am aware of it, but not in the way that can influence my choice. My choices are made to win games with Chelsea and nothing else.”

Most of the Chelsea squad are likely to be involved in international competition this summer but there are many questions above numerous players such as the aforementioned Abraham, Callum Hudson-Odoi, Mason Mount, Antonio Rudiger, Edouard Mendy, Kai Havertz and Kurt Zouma to name but a few.
