Why Edinson Cavani missed Manchester United’s clash with Manchester City

Man United vs Man City

Sunday’s marquee Premier League tie is of course taking place in Manchester.

Manchester City are playing host to bitter rivals, Manchester United at the Etihad

City headed into the meeting on a staggering 21-game winning run across all competitions, whilst also not losing in 28 outings.

Manchester United, on the other hand, have picked up just one win in five PL games, notching four draws.

Such a dip in form from the Reds means they are now in danger of slipping out of the top-four, despite previously boasting a decent points gap over the chasing back.

Ahead of kick-off on Sunday, United were down in 3rd, just four points clear of Chelsea and five points clear of Everton, though the Toffees do also have a game in hand on United.

As a result, losing to City would obviously deal a big blow to Man United’s Champions League hopes.

Why Cavani missed Man City clash

So, Solskjaer and co. were no doubt keen to have as strong a squad as possible at their disposal to take on the Sky Blues.

However, when the teams were revealed an hour before kick-off, United had one very noticeable absentee.

Edison Cavani had recently returned from injury and started for the Manchester powerhouse in midweek vs Crystal Palace.

However, the Uruguayan was completely omitted from Man United’s matchday squad on Sunday.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has since provided an explanation for the Uruguayan’s absence, confirming that the hitman had to ‘come off’ training on Saturday as he did not feel right:
