Video: Samuel Eto’o’s son scores brace including crazy free-kick on Cameroon under-20 debut

Eto’o: Like father like son

Former Barcelona striker Samuel Eto’o has given the world amazing goals and his name is set to continue in the sport as his son scored a brace on his Cameroon under 20s debut including a free kick his father would have been exceptionally proud of.

Currently playing for Spanish side Real Oviedo’s youth team, Eto’o was given his first opportunity internationally at under 20s level against Mozambique.

“Bearing this name on the shirt is difficult, as from an early age people expected to see Samuel Eto’o at his best in me. Many people wanted me to play like him, but of course with the body of a child or teenager. That is really hard and frankly impossible,” said Eto’o.

Dealing with mounting pressure

There are a number of players around the world with footballing fathers who are trying to emulate the successes of their family name. Giovanni Simeone, Daniel Maldini and Erling Haaland to name but a few.

Speaking a couple years ago, Eto’o spoke of how he was dealing with the pressure on his shoulders.

“There are people who think that you’re fortunate. They see only the good aspects and take it as natural, that everything is all right,” he said speaking in 2019 as a 17-year-old.

“The positive thing is, even as a 17-year-old I have a high frustration tolerance and I am mentally much stronger because I overcame this pressure.“

“When I was younger I always got advice, more than now. He always told me to work hard, that this career is hard, that I should never stop chasing my dreams and be hungry for goals. I also owe a lot to my mother that I always stayed down to earth and always had a clear head.”

With him now stepping loudly onto the international stage, interest is likely to grow in the young talent.
