Reports in the English media this weekend suggest that out-of-favour Liverpool man Nat Phillips is attracting interest from a host of clubs.
Phillips, a 23-year-old stopper, has been on the books of the Reds since 2016.
After opting to depart Bolton’s youth setup, the then-free agent was snapped up by the Merseyside giants, and assigned to the club’s academy.
The seasons that followed saw Phillips impress those in charge at Anfield, eventually resulting in Jurgen Klopp opting to call the Englishman up to train with his senior squad in the summer of 2018.
Phillips continued to develop with Liverpool’s reserves over the course of the campaign, but struggled for first-team opportunities.
He was, though, actually an unused member of the Reds’ Champions League final squad last year.
With a quartet of central-defenders having still sat firmly ahead of Phillips in the pecking order of Jurgen Klopp ahead of the current campaign, however, it was decided that a loan spell away from Anfield would best serve the 23-year-old’s development.
As such, Phillips was farmed out to German 2nd division outfit Stuttgart during the summer.
And the former Bolton man went on to play an important role at the Mercedes-Benz Arena, notching 22 appearances as the German giants reclaimed their spot in the Bundesliga for the 2020/21 season.
It should also be noted that Phillips returned to Liverpool briefly in January, amid a defensive injury crisis at Anfield.
On the back of his loan spell away from the Premier League champions coming to an end, though, Phillips’ future has been thrown up in the air once more.
To this point, it has remained altogether unclear what Jurgen Klopp’s plans for the stopper entail for next season.
Speaking last month, Phillips suggested that his performances in pre-season were likely to determine whether or not he is entrusted with a spot in Liverpool’s first-team squad in 2020/21.
But, with the Reds set to get their Premier League campaign underway in just 6 days’ time, the situation, as of this moment, appears no clearer.
And, as outlined above, if the latest speculation in the media is to be believed, then a number of clubs appear keen to take advantage of the uncertainty surrounding Phillips at present.
As per a report from the Daily Express, a trio of Championship outfits, in the form of Blackburn, Bristol City and Swansea City, are keen on the 23-year-old’s services.
A number of German sides are also believed to be interested in coaxing Phillips back to the country.
It is added that:
‘Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp is willing to entertain both loan and permanent deals for the Bolton Wanderers academy graduate.’
