Timo Werner sends title warning to Chelsea after conceding three vs Southampton

Chelsea held by Southampton

Chelsea played host to Southampton on Saturday afternoon in a 3 pm kick-off.

The Blues headed into the tie on the back of a 4-0 victory over Crystal Palace.

However, with both Thiago Silva and Edouard Mendy absent, Chelsea’s backline once again looked shaky.

The Londoners would go 2-0 up inside half an hour thanks to a Timo Werner brace.

However, some questionable defending on the part of Chelsea, and Kepa in particular, allowed the Saints to draw level with just under an hour played.

Kai Havertz would fire Chelsea into the lead just a few minutes later as Frank Lampard and co. looked set to hold on for the three points.

But in injury-time, Jannik Vestergaard would rescue a point for Southampton.

Werner’s warning to Chelsea

Said result was already the second time Chelsea have let in three goals in a single game this term.

The Blues also have one of the worst defensive records of the sides currently in the top half of the table, an issue they were plagued with last term as well.

And after conceding three vs Southampton, Timo Werner has sent out something of a warning to his Chelsea teammates.

When discussing Chelsea’s defensive issues, the German voiced the opinion that it is defences that win you titles and if Chelsea continue to leak so many goals every game, it will be hard to win both games and titles:

“I don’t know if we have a problem but in the end the last three games we concede six goals and that’s not where we want to be,” he said.

“I think we are Chelsea, we want to battle for titles.

“In the end think it’s not the offence that wins titles. In Germany we always say defence wins titles. I think that’s true.

“When we concede so many goals in every game then it’s hard to win games but in the end also to win titles.

“I think we have to work in it because six goals in three games is too much. I think we have to be better in this.”
