Tierney makes Arsenal return as Scot joins squad for Benfica tie

Tierney travels to Rome

Arsenal have been handed a major boost ahead of their Europa last 32 fixture against Benfica on Thursday evening with the news that Kieran Tierney will be available for Mikel Arteta’s squad.

The Scottish International has been missing for a significant period of time and Arsenal have needed to deputise by using two right-sided fullbacks in the form of Bellerin (right) and Cedric (left).

Arteta confirmed the news in his press conference ahead of the match with the Portuguese side.

“Thomas [Partey] didn’t travel, he’s not there yet. He’s still training individually. Kieran is part of the squad,” said Arteta.

Whether the Scottish international starts is unknown but the more interesting question should he, is whom Arteta trusts with the right-back role?

Arteta responds to Willian criticism

One Arsenal player who has faced a fair amount of criticism this season has been the Brazilian forward Willian.

The 32 year-old arrived from Chelsea in the summer and has so far recorded just three assists all season without contributing a single goal.

Arteta has been persistent with the wide man which has drawn questions from many areas of the supporter base who believe the likes of Nicolas Pepe and Gabriel Martinelli should be given more chances over the veteran.

Arteta responded to the questions regarding the player and the negative press he has received.

“I don’t say it’s unfair. The expectations of Willy and the goals he can score, the assists he can create. It’s normal that people will write things about him. We have to protect him as much as we can,” he said.

“What he’s doing at the moment, the way he’s training and working, the way he’s willing to give everything to the team is what I demand. It will come with the quality that he has.”
