Arteta admits to busy summer
Mikel Arteta has been speaking ahead of Arsenal’s game against Chelsea today and admitted, when asked about the summer transfer window, that there is much to do.
Arsenal find themselves with the possibility of finishing in one of their worst EPL positions despite continual spending.
The squad is in need of an overhaul and Arteta clearly knows this.
“There are so many things to do because we already have a lot of players on loan and a lot of players with contracts still that we need to sort. It will depend what happens with a lot of those players and what we are able to recruit to improve the team, that is going to determine where we are,” he said.
There is a clear emphasis on recruitment which will excite Arsenal supporters and provide hope.
However, Arsenal’s recruitment in the past has led them to where they are and much about how they buy and sell must change for the team to progress.
Some ‘things will come out’
However, it does seem that the exit from European football has meant that some plans will have to change.
A lack of financial income from a season without the continental competitions will have a knock-on effect to how the club operate this summer.
Arteta said that whilst the planning has been long term, referencing ongoing talks with executives throughout the year, that recent events have changed things.
“We’ve been sitting down the whole year. We’ve been in constant communication and things will change, some things will stick to the plan that we already had and some other things will come out. But we sit down very, very regularly to talk about those things.”
This then points the fingers at the ownership. Were there ‘big plans,’ as described by Josh Kroenke for the ownership to invest in the club, why does the club need to change its plans?
Arsenal fans will be concerned these were yet more empty words from those who run the club and have overseen its decline into mediocrity.
No matter the amount of money available, it is imperative that Arsenal look to make big changes to the squad this summer.
Granted Mikel Arteta has made mistakes but it seems he is not going anywhere for the time being. Results against Leicester, Man United, Chelsea, Spurs and Leeds United this season have shown the potential of the side and the style Arteta wants.
But consistency, team selection errors and poor man and in-game management have led Arsenal to their dire plight also.
Should Arsenal fail yet again then more scenes, as shown below, are likely to become the norm for the long-term.
