Thiago Silva scheduled to sign for Chelsea on Thursday/ Brazil legend tips defender to do ‘great job’ for Blues

A fresh update concerning Thiago Silva’s arrival at Chelsea has been forthcoming online on Wednesday.

Chelsea set to sign Silva

Recent weeks have, of course, seen Silva heavily tipped to make the move to Stamford Bridge.

The now 35-year-old is a free agent after his latest PSG contract expired at the conclusion of the 2020 Champions League final.

And earlier this week, it was reported that the Brazilian had indeed accepted an offer from Chelsea for a two-year deal.

Said deal will reportedly see Silva earn around €6m-per-season.

No official announcement concerning Silva’s arrival has yet been forthcoming.

However, as mentioned above, an update regarding the defender’s imminent Chelsea switch has, on Wednesday, emerged.

As per David Ornstein of The Athletic, Silva is scheduled to sign for the Blues on Thursday:

Rivaldo backs Silva to do well at Chelsea

And whilst some may view Chelsea’s signing of Silva as a bit of a waste given the veteran stopper’s age, one high-profile Brazilian has taken the opposite view.

The man in question is former Barcelona and Brazil national team star, Rivaldo.

When discussing his fellow countryman’s switch to Chelsea, Rivaldo stated he is confident Silva can do a great job at Stamford Bridge, whilst also voicing the opinion that footballers can easily play at the top level at 36 or 37 providing they keep themselves in good physical condition:

“At 35, Thiago Silva will sign for two seasons with Chelsea and I’m confident that he will do a great job there, as he is a great centre back with excellent positioning and vast experience of world football.

“I think he still comes with plenty to offer. I’d back him to produce a good football in the Premier League and should be a commanding voice in Frank Lampard’s otherwise young squad.

“Nowadays, many players extend their careers until their late-thirties and Silva is a good example of that, as I was in my time.

“If you keep yourself in good physical condition you can easily play at the highest level until 36, 37 years old.”
