The best front 3 in Europe: Which team comes out on top?

Improving perfection

Bayern Munich’s demolition of Schalke 8-0 yesterday evening displayed even the best teams can still improve.

Leroy Sane joined Bayern to complete the front 3 of Robert Lewandowski and Serge Gnabry. The German winger joined the Bavarian club for an initial fee of around £44 million and looks to have improved an already brilliant Hansi Flick side.

It begs the question as we enter a new season whether Bayern have solidified themselves as having the best front 3 in Europe?

With Kingsley Coman and Ivan Perisic (now returned to Inter Milan after a 1-year loan deal) easily usurped by Sane, the European champions sport a mercurial combination of clinical finishing, rapid wing play and complete synergy in movement. This begs the question can any side top that?

The competitors

Arguably the closest competition to Bayern currently are the team they succeeded to European supremacy. Liverpool’s Sadio Mane, Mo Salah and Roberto Firmino have been the key to Liverpool’s resurface as one of Europe’s main forces.

However, whilst Mane and Salah are prolific, Firmino’s enabler role means he pales in comparison to Lewandowski and the goal output of the German club therefore outstrips the Merseysiders. Still the thought of a 2020/21 face-off makes the mouth water.

Manchester City’s line-up is a nightmare for Fantasy Football players. Pep’s unpredictability in team selection and depth of quality means it is tricky to nail down a consistent front three.

It is arguable though that Raheem Sterling and Sergio Aguero take two of the spots. The final position is between Riyad Mahrez and Bernado Silva. But whoever starts, Bayern’s starting trio take this 2-1 with only Sterling in with a shout of starting for the Bavarians.

France’s representatives are strong. PSG’s Neymar, Kylian Mbappe and Di Maria (with a shout out for Choupo-Moting of course) drove the French champions to the Champions League final.

However, it was a Bayern side lacking in Leroy Sane which bested them. Mbappe’s best position is still questionable. Were they to field a word-class striker with Mbappe and Neymar either side, a stronger case could certainly be made.

In reality, even throwing Barcelona, Real Madrid and Juventus in, Bayern reign supreme.

Future possibilities?

There are potential future rivals though, closer to home that the German and European champions might think. Borussia Dortmund’s Erling Haaland is starting his first full season with BVB. Being flanked by the highly coveted Jadon Sancho and Thorgan Hazard adds real threat.

A fully fit Marco Reus thrown into the mix could even ask questions. Although in terms of the German’s position that would be up for debate.

Bayern’s side beyond the front three is almost as scary too. Surely the side are to remain favourites to retain their European crown.
