It was, of course, confirmed on Tuesday afternoon that Manchester United and England star Harry Maguire had been found guilty of aggravated assault, resisting arrest, and repeated attempts of bribery following an incident whilst the defender was on holiday on the Greek island of Mikonos.

Maguire was swiftly handed a suspended prison sentence of 21 months and 10 days, meaning he wouldn’t actually face any time behind bars.

What did follow, though, was Maguire being removed from the England squad he had been named in earlier that day.

Gareth Southgate, who named his squad to face Iceland and Denmark at St. George’s Park earlier today, has provided an update:

Maguire to return in October?

Following Tuesday’s verdict, Maguire’s legal team submitted an appeal on Wednesday morning, which was accepted later that day.

The appeal will now lead to a full retrial in a more senior court.

Crucially, it also means that Maguire currently has no criminal record and is once again presumed innocent until proven guilty whilst not being subject to any international travel restrictions.

As well as being granted an appeal, Maguire also looks as though he will be handed another chance by Gareth Southgate.

The Times reported on Thursday that Maguire could yet be called up to the England squad for their matches in October, with it believed that Southgate has not closed the door on the United captain.

England will face all of Wales, Belgium and Denmark in October.
