Southgate believes Tottenham’s Harry Kane could break Rooney’s England record

Belgium vs England

England began their latest round of international fixtures with a friendly against close rivals, the Republic of Ireland.

The Three Lions, unsurprisingly, headed into the clash as heavy favourites, with Ireland’s recent form far from impressive.

And when all was said and done at Wembley, proceedings played out true to form.

The visitors started the tie fairly brightly, but a Harry Maguire header 18 minutes in soon put a damper on Ireland’s hopes of an upset.

Jadon Sancho then made it two 31 minutes in, before a 56th-minute Dominic Calvert-Lewin penalty made sure of a comfortable England win.

England will now turn their attention to more serious matters, with a Nations League clash with Belgium taking place later today.

The tie is a huge one for the Three Lions, with a loss extremely likely to call their hopes of toping their NL group.

Kane to break Rooney’s record?

Ahead of the Belgium tie, Gareth Southgate has been speaking about Harry Kane.

The Tottenham hitman has been one of England’s standout stars for several years now and is clearly Southgate’s main No.9.

This isn’t too surprising because as well as his assists, Kane’s England goalscoring record is pretty impressive – netting 32 in 49 outings for his country.

Said tally makes Kane the 6th-best England goalscorer of all time, 21 strikes behind current leader Wayne Rooney.

However, Southgate has recently voiced the opinion that Kane could well break Rooney’s record:

“In terms of what is possible, the goalscoring record is the really interesting one because his strike rate for us is phenomenal and he has time on his side to chase Wayne Rooney’s record which would be a remarkable feat.

“I know from his perspective, while the personal achievement is something he is driven towards, it is the team achievement.

“He is so focused on the team having success and he would want to look back over the next few years at the team achieving.”
