Mason Greenwood has been omitted from the England squad after a conversation between Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and Gareth Southgate according the The Athletic.
Greenwood was not in the Manchester United squad which beat Everton 3-1 at Goodison Park, his third absence of the season. Missing both the Newcastle and PSG matches, the reasons for this was put down to illness and injury.
However, the reason behind the recent omission from the squad is more serious. Illness was a mitigating factor but the forward has also supposedly been ‘lethargic’ in training. The report suggested that questions were being raised as to the 19-year-old’s sleep pattern.
Naturally, a person not getting enough sleep will have a negative impact on their physical and mental health leaving them more susceptible to illness. Greenwood has had a difficult start to the 2020/21 campaign having broken quarantine with Phil Foden whilst on England duty in Iceland.
The most recent squad has seen United teammate Marcus Rashford called up for the forward line. The 23-year-old joins Tammy Abraham, Dominic Calvert-Lewin, Harry Kane, Jadon Sancho, Jack Grealish and Raheem Sterling.

Aston Villa’s impressive 3-0 victory over Arsenal again highlighted again the great form of Jack Grealish. The England international gave Hector Bellerin and Rob Holding a torrid time.
Grealish has been instrumental in Villa’s fantastic start to the league season. Speaking ahead of his first senior call-up, Grealish spoke about his ambitions and gratitude for the call.
“There is so much talent in and around my position in the England team at the moment that there is always a little doubt that you might not get in,” Grealish said. “To finally get the call-up, like the proper call-up where you’re in from the start, means much more to me than the last one.”

“I feel comfortable there. I feel like I deserve my place. I am playing against these guys week in, week out. Sometimes you can get star struck, training with the likes of Raheem Sterling and Harry Kane. They’re all human beings at the end of the day and make you feel welcome.”
