Smalling finally secures Man United exit/Sergio Romero’s wife takes swipe at Red Devils as Everton turn to Olsen

Whilst one Manchester United player secures a deadline day exit from the club, another has been left to ponder what might have been.

United farewell

The individual to have clinched a long overdue exit departure from Old Trafford comes in the form of Chris Smalling.

Following Harry Maguire’s big-money move to United last summer, fellow English international Smalling was of course allowed to move on.

The 30-year-old joined Italian giants AS Roma on loan for the 2019/20 campaign.

And, all told, Smalling’s time in Serie A proved a huge success. The former Fulham man rediscovered both his form and confidence at the heart of Paulo Fonseca’s backline, proving a key performer throughout the season.

As such, news that Roma had come to the decision to pursue a permanent deal for Smalling initially came as little surprise.

What did come as a surprise, however, was just how long negotiations dragged on for.

Despite Roma having initially made it clear that they were keen to extend Smalling’s stay with the club last October, until today, an agreement between the capital giants and United had not been forthcoming.

In turn, the former had been forced to look towards alternative targets, with a deal having looked altogether unlikely before tonight’s transfer deadline.

As it so often does on transfer deadline day, however, a last-minute twist was forthcoming on Monday evening.

After word began to do the rounds that Roma had reignited their pursuit of Smalling, confirmation soon followed that a transfer was very much back on the cards.

And now, after the Giallorossi managed to get the paperwork over the line with minutes to spare, an official announcement has been forthcoming.

Taking to social media a short time ago, Manchester United confirmed that Smalling has indeed departed the club for the Stadio Olimpico on a permanent basis:

‘Respect’

As outlined above, however, whilst one Old Trafford wantaway is granted his wish, another looks set to stay put.

Sergio Romero has inevitably been tipped for a departure from Man United this summer, after slipping to 3rd in the goalkeeping pecking order on the back of Dean Henderson’s return.

A host of clubs, in turn, have been named as keen suitors of the Argentine, who long stood, in the eyes of most, as the Premier League’s most reliable no.2.

Everton have been the outfit most persistently linked with a swoop for Romero, with speculation having ramped up early on Monday that the Toffees had indeed reignited their pursuit.

Such reports, however, were soon followed by claims that United would not sanction a move to Goodison Park for the 33-year-old, with Carlo Ancelotti’s men now viewed as a ‘rival‘.

And one individual who was has this evening made her feelings crystal clear regarding the stance of the transfer chiefs at Old Trafford is Romero’s wife.

Taking to social media, Eliana Guercio aimed a major dig at United, pleading for ‘respect for once’:

Guercio’s pleas, however, appear to have fallen on deaf ears.

As confirmed by a host of reliable sources, Everton appear to be closing on the loan signing of AS Roma goalkeeper Robin Olsen:
