Manchester United legend Peter Schmeichel has recently moved to defend fellow goalkeeper and United man, David de Gea, after the Spaniard made yet another high-profile error recently.
De Gea struggling
It’s fair to say de Gea has been going through somewhat of a rough patch at Man United for a while now.
The Spaniard was, for several years, by far and away United’s best player and perhaps even the best keeper in the English top-flight.
Over the last two campaigns, though, de Ge hasn’t exactly been at his best.
Shortly before football was brought to a halt in March, de Gea made a rather costly mistake vs Everton, leading to this rather unfortunate stat circulating online:
7 – David De Gea has made seven errors leading directly to an opposition goal in the Premier League since the start of last season, the joint-most alongside Martin Dubravka and Bernd Leno. Shocker. pic.twitter.com/WNoCTxhxds

Schmeichel defends de Gea
And more recently, de Gea produced the latest in a growing list of high-profile errors, this time vs Chelsea.
The Blues took a 1-0 lead shortly before half-time during the pair’s FA Cup semi-final clash with de Gea perhaps not at his best for Olivier Giroud’s opener.
It would be Mason Mount’s strike just moments into the second 45, though, which raised a fair few eyebrows.

Obviously, de Gea can’t solely be blamed for United crashing out of the FA Cup but his poor keeping certainly didn’t help.
And with Dean Henderson waiting in the wings, some have begun to call on the English shot-stopper to replace de Gea.
One man who seemingly doesn’t share this view, however, is the aforementioned Peter Schmeichel, who recently voiced the opinion de Gea is being treated unfairly:
“De Gea’s one of the best goalkeepers in the Premier League for the last I don’t know how many years.
“One of the things I believe is that the way Ole’s changed the way the team plays hasn’t fitted in with the way that De Gea has played in the last couple of years and so he would have had to make changes to his game.
“And in making changes you’re always making mistakes. If you don’t make mistakes, you don’t really learn.
“They’ve now got third place, they’ve got the Europa League to focus on now, he comes back with a couple of weeks break, comes back to a new season, he’ll be alright.
“I see David de Gea as the goalkeeper for Manchester United for many years to come and I think he has been treated unfairly in all honesty.”
