Raheem Sterling reported likely to be fit to play Arsenal / Guardiola’s ‘boring’ style at fault for Champions League failings

The international break often leaves fans on their edge of their seat but for the wrong reasons. Hoping that the players they need for their club sides return unscathed can take priority.

Manchester City are struggling with both Sergio Aguero and Gabriel Jesus out as their senior striking options. Raheem Sterling deputised in City’s central role with Riyad Mahrez also occupying the position in the South American pair’s absence.

Sterling withdrew from the England international squad with a ‘minor hamstring injury.’

It now looks though that City will welcome the English winger back into the fold after reports emerged Sterling will likely be fit for the weekend.

Pep Guardiola is in need of points having just picked up 4 from the opening 3 matches. The opening day win against Wolves was followed by a shock 5-2 home defeat to Leicester City and a 1-1 draw with Marcelo Bielsa’s Leeds United.

Meanwhile, Arsenal have won against Fulham, West Ham and Sheffield United. Dropping points away at Anfield before knocking Liverpool out of the League Cup on penalties.

Boring Pep

In a very targeted outburst, former Bayern Munich boss Felix Magath claimed that Pep Guardiola’s success at Barcelona was down to Messi.

Messi won the titles, not Guardiola,” said the former Fulham boss. “Without Messi, this system has never worked as successfully for Guardiola, otherwise he would have won the Champions League with Bayern or Manchester City long ago.”

Magath, who himself never won the Champions League, remarked, “In my opinion, Guardiola generally too often gets lost in trying to win a game in advance. That tactic often ends in wrong decisions, which prevent success.”

Guardiola has just a single season remaining on his current contract. And whilst reports have suggested that Manchester City want to renew, European failure could make the decision-makers reconsider.
