Paul Pogba says national side is ‘breath of fresh air’ as Frenchman situation at Manchester United becomes more doubtful

Pogba speaks out

Pogba has spoken out about his happiness playing with the French national team and mentioned its contrast to his time with club side Manchester United.

In an interview with RTLPogba spoke openly about his feelings.

“I had never known such a difficult period in my career,” the Frenchman said. “The France team is a breath of fresh air, the group is exceptional, it’s magic.”

“We are very happy to come here and all very happy to see each other again. It is not the same as with the club. We all group together, it is magical. We realise that everyone is happy to come and that makes a difference.”

Pogba played excellently in France’s imperative 1-0 Nations League victory over Portugal. Playing alongside match winner N’Golo Kante, the Manchester United midfielder was pulling the strings including a great through pass to Griezmann who set up Pogba’s club mate Anthony Martial for a clear chance.

Pogba also spoke about his nation’s aspirations ahead of the summer tournament. “Our aim is to win the Euros. We want to win, it is meaningless if we cannot go all the way. We need to continue on what we did at the World Cup.”

Coach’s sympathy

French national team coach Didier Deschamps was sympathetic for Pogba speaking in his Monday press conference.

“He is in a situation with his club where he cannot be happy, neither with his playing time nor with the position he is playing,” said Deschamps.

“He is not in his best period, he has had a series of injuries and Covid-19, which has hit him quite hard. He needs to find his rhythm.”

“We can’t say that he is fulfilled in what he does at club level. With me, there is no such concern, but I try to manage it too. When a player is not comfortable at his club, obviously, he is happy to play for the France team.”

Pogba will return to Manchester with his situation no less difficult and more questions surfacing than answers.
