Thomas Partey’s performance in Arsenal’s win over Rapid Wien last night has since seen early comparisons drawn with Gunners icon Patrick Vieira.
Auba seals it
Mikel Arteta’s men made the trip to the Allianz Stadion on Thursday, for the club’s Europa League season opener.
The visitors headed into proceedings in search of a bounce-back result, on the back of a Premier League defeat at Manchester City last weekend.
And, when all was said and done, bounce back is precisely what Arsenal managed.
The north Londoners, following an altogether lacklustre first-half display, actually fell behind to Wien, when Taxiarchis Fountas took advantage of a Bernd Leno error shortly after the interval.
Arsenal, though, soon fought back, levelling things up courtesy of David Luiz’s header 20 minutes from time.
And the turnaround was complete less than 5 minutes later, as a silky team move on the part of the Gunners eventually saw Hector Bellerin square for Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang to slot home from close range.

‘All the attributes’
In the 24 hours since Arsenal’s win in Austria, meanwhile, much of the chatter, amongst fans and the media alike, has surrounded Thomas Partey.
Ghanaian midfielder Partey was handed his full debut versus Rapid, and to say that he went on to impress would be putting it lightly.
The 27-year-old, particularly during the 2nd-half, bossed the midfield battle, showcasing his near-unrivalled combination of touch, technique, vision, athleticism and prowess in the tackle.
And, in turn, it has not taken at all long for the inevitable comparisons to mount.
The one player whom most were quick to (prematurely) liken Partey to throughout his commanding display on Thursday was none other than Patrick Vieira.
The former Atletico Madrid man’s complete control of the middle of the park proved the central theme throughout the comparisons.
Two of the more high-profile individuals to have expressed the opinion that Partey indeed looked Vieira-esque during his full Gunners debut, meanwhile, were Ray Parlour and Martin Keown.
Speaking during respective post-match interviews last night, the former teammates of Arsenal’s greatest ever midfielder were quick to wax lyrical regarding Partey’s talents.
Parlour, speaking to talkSPORT, explained:
‘You can see he has got all the attributes to be like a Patrick Vieira. If he gets anywhere near Patrick Vieira we have had a right result as an Arsenal fan!’
‘They knew what they were buying there – a very strong player that we lacked in that area – but let’s not get carried away, let’s give him a chance.’
‘Let’s wait until we are playing the big sides like Manchester City, Liverpool and see if he can boss midfield then. If he can do it then, then we can say we have got a proper player here.’
Ex-Gunners stopper Keown, meanwhile, gushed:
‘I think you know when you see a player immediately add that touch of class, who wants to play and makes things happen. He’s so silky smooth, he’s oozed class and been everywhere.’
‘This is where he looks like Vieira for me when he’s travelling with the ball and making things happen.’
