Mikel Arteta responds to surprise Arsenal links with Chelsea’s Jorginho

Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta was this afternoon drawn on the claims that his side are expressing an interest in the signature of Chelsea star Jorginho.

Gunners making moves

The hunt for midfield reinforcements on the red half of north London has of course been widely covered in the media this summer.

As Arteta and co. continue their rebuilding project at the Emirates, the club’s ranks in the middle of the park have evidently been identified as an area in desperate need of fresh blood.

To this point, a whole host of high-profile names have therefore been tipped as Gunners targets.

Chief among these have been Atletico Madrid standout Thomas Partey, and Lyon creator Houssem Aouar.

In fact, just this evening, a number of breaking reports stemming from France suggested that the latter has already agreed to the personal terms of a deal with Arsenal:

‘Not appropriate’

Thus far, however, whilst the transfer chiefs at the Emirates continue to work hard to grant Arteta’s wishes, a deal to actually coax a new midfield option to the club is yet to be struck.

The possibility therefore remains that Arsenal could be forced to look away from their first-choice targets, towards backup options.

And, as outlined above, one such option to have surprisingly been touted in the media over the last 24 hours comes in the form of Jorginho.

Sky Sports last night suggested that Mikel Arteta is a fan of the talents of the Italian international, having acted as assistant to Pep Guardiola when Manchester City attempted to lure Jorginho to the Etihad back in 2018.

As such, speaking in a press conference on Friday, the Arsenal boss was drawn on the rumours of his side’s interest in the 28-year-old.

Arteta, though, was keen to keep his cards close to his chest, explaining:

‘We are still open to improve our team. We are looking for different options depending on what happens with some of our players here so we are getting prepared just in case we need to do something.’

When pressed further regarding Jorginho’s qualities, the Spaniard added:

‘Sorry, but I cannot talk about players that play for a different team. [Discussing] their qualities is not appropriate from my side.’
