Mikel Arteta coy on possibility of David Luiz staying at Arsenal beyond current contract

David Luiz’s Arsenal stint

David Luiz joined Arsenal from London rivals, Chelsea, in the summer of 2019.

The Gunners are understood to have paid around £8m for the Brazilian’s services.

Luiz has since gone on to endure something of a mixed stint in north London.

At times, the 33-year-old, especially when operating in a back-five, has provided some much-needed experience and quality to Arenal’s backline.

However, as has often proved the case throughout his career, Luiz has also made some quite high-profile mistakes, which cost his side – including vs Manchester City last June when he was sent off and gave away a penalty in the process.

Arteta on Luiz extending Arsenal stay

But this term, with Arsenal looking to switch to a back-four, Luiz has seemingly slipped down the pecking order somewhat.

Gabriel and Pablo Mari appear to be the favourites for the left-sided centre-back spot, which makes sense given they are left-footed.

Whilst Rob Holding, and William Saliba when he returns from his loan, should provide a decent amount of cover at the right centre-back spot.

So, given Luiz’s age and the fact his current deal runs out in the summer, Arsenal fans were probably assuming 2020/21 would be the last time they see Luiz.

However, when drawn on the possibility of Luiz staying at the Emirates beyond the current term recently, Mikel Arteta was rather coy:

“We will see what happens.

“There are a lot of things happening around the club, a lot of decisions to make. I don’t want to rush any decisions. I just want players to be focused.

“They know that they have six months left or eight months left, whatever it is, some of them a year. They know that. Their contracts are like that, we cannot change that.

“We cannot change all the contracts right now. I think it is time to be focused. We have been through a difficult period in the last few weeks and I just want people to focus on football.

“If you do what you have to do on the football pitch, you will deserve the chance to keep with us if this is what you want.”
