Solskjaer provides Maguire update
Manchester United have experienced some of the worst possible luck during their congestive fixture period.
Against Aston Villa, captain Harry Maguire injured his ankle and needed to be replaced.
The England international has been a mainstay in the United defence and missing games is described by Ole Gunnar Solskjaer as ‘unheard of’ but the Norwegian warned they could be without him for a ‘few weeks.’
“Harry has been excellent and it’s almost unheard of, the minutes he’s played without missing him. We’ve a [Europa League] final to look forward to and hopefully it will be with Harry; it might be a few weeks, it might be a couple of days, we don’t know. Hopefully it won’t be too bad, but I’m not a doctor, and we’ve got to scan him on Monday,” said Solskjaer
“He may be available on Thursday [against Liverpool], but I don’t know, it might be longer. I’ll tell you more on Thursday.”
Eric Bailly was the man brought on in his place to partner Victor Lindelöf which could become a regular pairing in Maguire’s stead.
United set for heavy rotation
With the injury and fixture scheduling in mind, Solskjaer is expected to make heavy changes.
Fortunately for the Norwegian, he has plenty of options available to him.
The Times suggests that, should he want to, Solskjaer could easily field an entirely second string squad:
United have a strong bench and could easily field a line-up of: De Gea — Brandon Williams, Eric Bailly, Axel Tuanzebe, Alex Telles — Nemanja Matic, Donny van de Beek — Amad Diallo, Juan Mata, Dan James (if fit), and Greenwood.
The focus will be on the Liverpool match more so than Leicester one would think.
Whilst United’s top 4 position is confirmed, a win over their fierce rivals would severely damage their chances of making the top 4 and therefore be without Champions League football for next season.
Something United fans would be very keen on.
Many players of Fantasy Football may now be wondering if their picks will be justified.
The likes of Marcus Rashford and Aaron Wan-Bissaka appear safe bets due to their importance in the team.
Likewise could be said of Bruno Fernandes, but with Donny van der Beek available, there is always the chance he could come in.
Henderson in goal is an interesting one. David De Gea starred against Roma but Solskjaer has persisted with Henderson in the league and there is the possibility he could play all three matches.
However, the centre-back pairing seems a solid option now unless Axel Tuanzebe is given another opportunity. Many United fans will be excited to see if star youngster Amad Diallo gets given a chance.
Fantasy wise however, Diallo would be a very lowly picked choice.
Rodgers on Maddison pick for Leicester
Brenden Rodgers faces some difficult choices knowing the pressure in increasing on top 4 hopes.
James Maddison is still recovering from an injury and Rodgers explained his hesitance in selecting the England international.
“He’s not 100 per cent, that’s something I said before, he’s not up to game speed,” he said.
“The problem is you’ve got to give them the minutes and game-time to try to get there, likewise with Ricky.
“These are things that we need to consider coming into these last important games now. He (Maddison) will have an important role to play for us, but we need to ensure we have the player that is going to give us that effect within the game.”
Should United rotate heavily as discussed, Rodgers may look at this game alongside the competitive Chelsea and Spurs fixtures as the most winnable despite the contrast in league position.
