Man United reportedly prioritising centre-back for 2021 summer window

Man United’s mixed window

Manchester United had something of a mixed summer transfer window.

Donny van de Beek was the first name through the door at Old Trafford and will likley prove a useful asset.

Alex Telles is almost certainly an upgrade on United’s current left-backs whilst Edinson Cavani is no doubt a better back-up centre-forward than Odion Ighalo, who will leave the club in January.

Facundo Pellistri and Amad Diallo are also extremely talented young prospects who could be huge players for the Red Devils in a few years.

However, despite doing some decent business, Man United’s transfer window could still easily be looked upon as a failure.

The main reasons for this being that they did not end up signing Jadon Sancho, who was understood to be a target of Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s.

United also failed to strengthen at centre-back, an area in which they have been lacking quality for some time.

Man United want a centre-back

With Pellistri and Diallo, both of whom are right-wingers, now signed by United, will the club still be so keen to land Jadon Sancho in another window?

That seems to be somewhat unclear at this time, but with not a single centre-back through the door at Old Trafford over this past window, United’s priority now looks to be strengthening at the back.

According to The Athletic, a centre-back is now viewed as the priority at Man United for the 2021 summer transfer window.

RB Leipzig stopper Dayot Upamecano was linked with Man United over this summer and is mentioned in the above-linked report by the Athletic.

The Frenchman is young, powerful, fast and would no doubt make a great partner for Harry Maguire.

However, The Athletic claim Upamecano will only consider a move to United if they are competing in the Champions League.
