Man City concern: Kevin De Bruyne departs Belgium camp before Iceland clash

Kevin De Bruyne has departed Roberto Martinez’s Belgium squad to return to Manchester City, it has been confirmed.

Concern for PL clubs

Creative maestro De Bruyne was of course just one of a host of Premier League stars called up for the latest round of international fixtures.

Despite the new season being just weeks old, delays caused by the Covid-19 pandemic saw international football return for the 2nd time in the space of a month last week.

The hectic nature of the schedule, though, is beginning to take its toll.

Recent days have seen players from across the Premier League landscape succumb to respective fitness concerns.

Chelsea’s Edouard Mendy, Spurs summer signing Sergio Reguilon and Manchester United defender Eric Bailly are amongst those to have handed their clubs an altogether unwelcome early season scare.

‘Couldn’t be fit enough’

And, as outlined above, the latest individual from the English top-flight to have seen the gruelling fixture list catch up with him is Kevin De Bruyne.

Midfielder De Bruyne was handed a start in Belgium’s Nations League meeting with England on Sunday evening.

It therefore came as something of a surprise when, with 73 minutes on the clock, and his country trailing, the 29-year-old was hauled off by Roberto Martinez.

An explanation for this decision, though, has since seemingly been provided.

In a post across the country’s official social media platforms a short time ago, Belgium confirmed that De Bruyne has been forced to return to Manchester.

This comes with the former Wolfsburg man having been deemed not fit enough to feature in the Red Devils’ next outing, a 2nd Nations League meeting with Iceland on Wednesday:

It now remains to be seen whether De Bruyne is simply suffering from heavy fatigue, or has picked up an injury.
