Liverpool reportedly have ‘no plans’ to offer Gini Wijnaldum new contract

Reports in the English media over the last 24 hours have surprisingly suggested that Liverpool do not intend to offer a new contract to midfielder Georginio Wijnaldum.

Reds stint

Dutch international Wijnaldum has been on the books of Liverpool since the summer of 2016.

And, despite his arrival from Premier League rivals Newcastle having initially gone somewhat under the radar, the 29-year-old has gone on to establish himself as an absolutely integral member of Jurgen Klopp’s midfield over the campaigns since.

Wijnaldum has started no less than 27 league games in each of his 4 seasons at Anfield, including all but three of the Reds’ league fixtures en route to English top-flight glory in 2019/20.

The Feyenoord youth product’s brace in Liverpool’s stunning Champions League semi-final comeback versus Barcelona last year, meanwhile, saw Wijnaldum etch his name indellibly into club folklore.

Gini to move on?

As such, the widespread recent speculation surrounding Wijnaldum’s future on Merseyside has come as something of a surprise.

The all-action midfielder’s current contract at Anfield is due to expire next summer, with little information having been forthcoming regarding the possibility of fresh terms being found.

And, as outlined above, if the latest speculation in the media is to be believed, then this comes with the Liverpool board not overly keen to seek out an agreement with Wijnaldum.

In fact, it has been suggested that the Reds have ‘no plans’ to tie the experienced Dutchman down for the long-term.

According to the Telegraph, Wijnaldum could even be sold this summer, to ensure some form of return is secured for his services.

Any funds raised, in turn, would then likely be utilised to fund a move for Bayern Munich star Thiago Alcantara.
