Liverpool provide Joe Gomez update/Former Real Madrid star among those named as potential free agent addition

Premier League champions Liverpool have this afternoon provided an update on the injury picked up by Joe Gomez.

Reds blow

Wednesday morning of course saw the worst fears of Jurgen Klopp and co. realised.

Just days after Trent Alexander-Arnold added to the defensive concerns of the injury-hit Merseysiders, word was forthcoming from the England camp that Gomez had also picked up a problem.

Initial reports suggested that the 23-year-old had gone to ground during a training session, with what was described as a ‘potentially serious’ knee injury.

In turn, Liverpool’s fans had since faced an anxious wait for an update on the wellbeing of their star stopper.

And, as outlined above, such an update has since been forthcoming. The news, though, is far from positive.

In a post across the club’s social media platforms a short time ago, the Reds confirmed that Gomez was, on Thursday, forced under the knife to repair a damaged tendon in his left knee.

Thankfully, Gomez escaped any issues with the surrounding ligaments, though the key takeaway from Liverpool’s announcement was that:

‘No timescale is being placed upon his return, though the issue is likely to rule him out for a significant part of the remainder of 2020-21.’

Reinforcements incoming?

As outlined above, Gomez’s injury leaves Jurgen Klopp and co. in something of a crisis when it comes to defensive options.

Virgil van Dijk has of course been ruled out for the long-term, Joel Matip has struggled for fitness over the early months of the season, whilst Fabinho, who has filled in admirably at the back, is also sidelined at present.

The possibility therefore exists that Liverpool could head into the club’s first outing following the international break with a pairing of Rhys Williams and Nat Phillips at the heart of the club’s backline.

One option which remains open to the English champions, though, is dipping into the free agent market.

Though the options are not exactly plentiful, Klopp and co. may be left with little choice but to bring in an emergency backup option, to act as cover until January.

Two such options, meanwhile, have already been touted in the media.

First up is Ezequiel Garay.

Veteran stopper Garay has been without a club since the expiration of his contract with Valencia this past summer.

The one-time Argentine international would nevertheless add some much-needed experience to Klopp’s defensive ranks, particularly when it comes to the Champions League.

And though he is of course no longer the defender who previously lined out for the likes of Real Madrid and Benfica, Liverpool could do a lot worse than bringing Garay in on a short-term deal.

Also named as a potential addition to the Reds’ defensive ranks on Thursday is Dary Janmaat.

Former Newcastle and Watford stopper Janmaat departed the latter this summer, following the club’s relegation to the Championship.

And, as per a report from TeamTalk, Liverpool have been offered the chance to bring in the Dutchman. Not only this, but it is added that the Merseyside giants are very much considering the possibility.

This comes amid claims that Janmaat has been personally recommended to the club by fellow countryman Gini Wijnaldum.

What makes Janmaat an intriguing option is the fact that he can play at both right-back and centre-half, meaning cover would also be provided for the sidelined Trent Alexander-Arnold.

It remains to be seen, though, whether Jurgen Klopp views the 31-year-old as a better option than the likes of the aforementioned Williams or the versatile James Milner.
