Liverpool ‘monitoring’ Ajax defender Perr Schuurs/ Souness tips Jota to replace Firmino

Jota recuses Liverpool vs West Ham

Liverpool played host to West Ham on Saturday evening as they looked to continue their unbeaten run.

After a shock 7-2 drubbing vs Aston Villa, the Reds are now unbeaten in five matches across all competitions.

Liverpool haven’t been overly spectacular in said ties, but have managed to get the job done.

And it was a similar story on Saturday. After going 1-0 down, Jurgen Klopp’s side struggled to break down the Hammers but a Mohamed Salah penalty and a late Diogo Jota strike meant Liverpool came away with a crucial three points.

The West Ham winner was Jota’s third league goal of the campaign in just five outings and the second of which to have played a key role in Liverpool securing a win.

As a result, following his positive display on Saturday, Graeme Souness voiced the opinion that Jota could replace Roberto Firmino in Liverpool’s starting line-up:

“I would imagine pretty quickly he will be challenging Firmino for a starting spot.

“Why not? He’s got goals, he got a goal in what every three games at Wolves. And now he’s in a better team so that should improve. I like him a lot, 23 years old, he can only do better.”

Liverpool linked with Ajax defender

Elsewhere on the Liverpool front, the Merseyside powerhouse have been linked with a central defender.

With Virgil van Dijk out and Joel Matip still struggling for fitness, Jurgen Klopp has had to call upon both Fabinho and Nathaniel Phillips to fill the void at the back.

And though both have done decent jobs so far, it does look as though Liverpool need to bring in some fresh legs at centre-back.

The latest centre-half to be linked with the Premier League champions is Perr Schuurs.

The 20-year-old has featured eight times for Ajaxed this season – including in the Champions League vs Liverpool.

And following his decent showing vs the Reds, the Mirror are claiming that Liverpool are now monitoring the stopper, who has just under two years left on his current deal.
