Leverkusen boss ‘no longer expecting’ Chelsea-linked Havertz to train with club

Chelsea look to have been handed a major boost in their pursuit of Kai Havertz with Bayer Leverkusen’s manager all but confirming on Monday that the German is set to leave the club.

Chelsea targeting Havertz

Chelsea’s interest in the German international has been well documented for some time now.

The Blues’ links to Havertz began to emerge back in early July.

Those rumours began to gain some ground in August with it claimed earlier in the month that the Londoners had taken a big step forward in their pursuit of the German.

It was added that personal terms had been agreed on a five-year deal for Havertz, who scored 12 and assisted six in 30 Bundesliga outings this past season, to join Chelsea.

The one stumbling block in a transfer actually coming to fruition, however, came in the form of an agreement on the appropriate fee, with it claimed at the time that the two clubs were around €20m apart in their valuation.

The reliable Fabrizio Romano then reported last week that Havertz’s move to Chelsea was just ‘one step away’ from completion, with a total agreement expected to be reached in the coming hours.

Romano also claimed that Chelsea’s latest bid, which totalled €100 million, would be accepted.

Leverkusen boss all but confirms Havertz’s exit

Leverkusen’s managing director, Rudi Voller, was quick to shut down these claims, though, labelling them ‘nonsense’.

However, there does appear to have been at least some truth in those reports because, as mentioned above, Peter Bosz has all but confirmed Havertz will be departing the BayArena.

Speaking in a press conference on Monday, the Leverkusen boss stated that he no longer expects Kevin Volland or Havertz to train with the club again:

“Unfortunately, our squad has not yet been determined. I no longer expect that Volland and Havertz will train with us again. It is possible that other players will also switch. We definitely have to bring players in too.”
