Leo Messi breaches Covid rules after Barcelona team BBQ

Messi breaches Covid regulations

It has been revealed that Barcelona captain Lionel Messi has breached Covid regulations by hosting a BBQ for the Barca squad despite maintaining social distancing measures and the squad being within its own elite sports bubble.

Spanish outlet ABC claims that the meeting broke the rules despite sports exceptions.

According to the regulations of the Generalitat, in force until May 8, it is interpreted that the meeting has taken place outside the law and is considered a “serious offense” because it puts a group of people at risk of contagion between 15 and 150 people.

Barca have claimed that because the squad is in its own ‘bubble’ that no offence was made.

The Barça club ensures that the team has not violated the rules set for the prevention of Covid at any time. The squad forms a single bubble, which already coexists during training sessions, in the Sports City or during the deployments and the safety distance was respected during the agape. In addition, it was answered that the presence of the players’ girlfriends and wives was not a problem because they form small bubbles.

According to Reuters, a fine 300-600 euros is given for breaking the rule of 6 in public areas in Catalonia.

Meetings of more than six people in public areas are banned in Catalonia and offenders can face fines of 300 to 600 euros ($350 to $700), police said.

It is unlikely this type of financial hit to footballers would make much difference and more so the bad press it will bring will be one of the worse eventualities of the issue.

Koeman responds to red card

In the midweek defeat to Granada, Barca head coach Ronald Koeman was sent off by the referee after conceding the equalising goal.

The Dutch coach claimed he did not understand why he had been sanctioned and that he himself had been disrespected by the 4th official.

“I don’t get it at all. I didn’t say anything, I didn’t insult him. I spoke to the fourth referee and he disrespected me,” said Koeman.

“I was not wrong, because according to the referee report I disrespected the fourth referee and for me, it is not like that. A lack of respect is insulting.

“I haven’t used ugly words, not once. If they’re going to put things I haven’t said I’ll have to do something. I don’t understand.”

Koeman will hope to take forward the weekend’s win over Valencia to push towards another La Liga title.
