Kolasinac and Elneny to miss Arsenal’s weekend action with positive COVID tests whilst on international duty

Elneny tests positive

Arsenal travel to Leeds hoping to get their Premier League season back on track. Mikel Arteta’s side return to action having been humbled in a 3-0 defeat to Aston Villa at the Emirates which left the club in the bottom half of the table.

Mohammed Elneny played in the match after an impressive display against Manchester United. The Egyptian had spent the prior season on loan with Besiktas but has returned to the Gunners an improved player and one Arteta seemingly trusts.

However, due to a positive Covid-19 test picked up whilst on international duty with Egypt, the 28-year-old will be unavailable meaning Arteta will need to form another midfield partnership if Thomas Partey is also deemed fit.

The Ghanaian international was substituted at half time against Villa and did not join up with the Black Stars during the break. Arteta has the options of Dani Ceballos, Granit Xhaka and Ainsley Maitland-Niles who can all play in the deeper central midfielder roles. Xhaka and Ceballos formed something of a strong pairing at the end of the 2019/20 campaign and helped the Gunners lift the FA Cup.

Kolasinac and co

Kolasinac has also reported a positive coronavirus result and will miss to journey up north. The Bosnian international has been used sparingly by Arteta and it is unlikely that his absence will be a key issue for the Spaniard.

Kieran Tierney has occupied the left-back and left centre-back position in both the back 3 and back 4 that Arteta has used this season. Kolasinac saw a Deadline Day move to Germany fail to materialise at the last moments and with January approaching, could look to once again find a way out of the club.

Kolasinac has been used to provide rotation throughout the Europa League group games. With the trip to Norway to face Molde approaching, the 27-year-old’s inability to play could cause Arteta to rethink how he plans to approach the game. Tierney may need to play additional minutes or one of Bukayo Saka or Maitland-Niles have deputised in the position in the past.

Pablo Mari is expected to be back soon and could be in line for a start in Norway and Calum Chambers played part of the Papa John’s Trophy clash against Gillingham which means he could be soon entering into the first team fold. Reiss Nelson’s knee problem could still be an issue but the status of the England under-21 international is currently unknown.

Gabriel Martinelli is expected back in full-training by the end of the calendar year.
