Jurgen Klopp praises ‘very important’ Rhys Williams & Neco Williams amid Liverpool’s injury crisis

Liverpool vs Ajax

Liverpool return to Champions League action on Tuesday evening.

The Reds will no doubt be keen to bounce back from their latest European defeat, which saw them suffer a shock 2-0 loss at Anfield vs Serie A outfit Atalanta last time out.

Said loss means Liverpool are actually yet to secure a spot in this campaign’s last 16, but they can do so on Tuesday.

Jurgen Klopp’s men start the week top of Group D, two points above Ajax and Atalanta with two games to play.

As a result, with Midtjylland Liverpool’s final group tie of the season, a win over Ajax on Tuesday will all but guarantee the Merseysiders top their group this time around.

Klopp on Neco & Rhys Williams

Ahead of the tie, Jurgen Klopp would hold his latest pre-match press conference on Monday afternoon.

The German discussed a number of topics during the presser including the fitness of Thiago, which you can read more about here.

Elsewhere, Klopp was full of praise for Liverpool youngsters Rhys Williams and Neco Williams.

With all of Joe Gomez, Virgil van Dijk and Trent Alexander-Arnold currently sidelined, Liverpool have had to look to their youth to plug the gaps in their backline.

And when speaking about the Williams duo pre-Ajax, Klopp had this to say:

“Look, if somebody is a Liverpool youth or Academy player in general, he has already, for sure, a lot of talent – otherwise you can’t make the cut. When you then go through all these difficult moments in your youth academy career then you are already used to some difficult situations and some pressure.

“But when you come up and you make the final step and you have to play in a competitive game for the first team, that’s a different animal. I think the boys adapted really well.

“They did a lot of really good stuff, helped us enormously, are very important – not only in the moment, but especially in the moment.

“The only problem they have from time to time is that people compare them with the guy who played the position before them. They are, in our case, all world-class players and that makes it maybe kind of difficult for people to see clear how talented these boys are. But from my point of view, they did really, really well.”
