Jurgen Klopp coy on Georginio Wijnaldum’s Liverpool contract situation

Arsenal vs Liverpool

Despite the 2019/20 Premier League campaign drawing to a close just over a month ago, top-end English football is already returning to our screens this weekend.

Said clash comes in the form of the Community Shield, the traditional curtain-raiser for the Premier League campaign.

After securing their first-ever Premier League title earlier this year, Liverpool are of course set to take part in the tournament against 2020’s FA Cup winners, Arsenal.

Both sides have superb records in this clash, with each winning the Community Shield a staggering 15 times.

Klopp on Wijnaldum’s contract

As Liverpool look to add to their ever-growing silverware collection, Jurgen Klopp held his latest press conference on Friday.

During the presser, the German was drawn on Georginio Wijnaldum’s contract at Anfield.

Wijnaldum, now 29, is currently in the final year of his current Liverpool deal.

And despite cementing himself as an integral member of the Merseyside outfit’s midfield over the last few seasons, the Dutchman’s long-term future in Liverpool is actually somewhat up in the air with recent reports going as far as to claim the Premier League champions have no plans to offer Wijnaldum a new deal.

When drawn on the midfielder’s contract in his pre-Arsenal presser, Klopp remained rather coy, stating that it is between them (Liverpool) and the player:

“That’s an open contract situation, otherwise we would know.

“It’s all between us and the player, these kind of things. It’s all good at the moment, all fine.

“Gini played very well in pre-season and has obviously had a couple of good seasons for us. That’s all I can say about that.”
