Joe Gomez suffers ‘potentially serious’ injury whilst on England duty leaving Liverpool and Klopp sweating

‘Potentially serious’

Joe Gomez has reportedly suffered a ‘potentially serious’ injury during England training. The England manager Gareth Southgate is set to address the media Wednesday evening where it will now be expected he will provide further details on the injury.

The injury would leave Jurgen Klopp in an even worse situation defensively than he could ever have imagined. Having lost Virgil van Dijk to injury earlier in the season and with concerns over Fabinho and Joel Matip’s fitness, some young players have seen chances in Europe.

These young talents will likely see further opportunities if the news regarding Gomez is indeed serious.

Made worse by the news that Trent Alexander-Arnold will also be out for a number of weeks. The 22-year-old picked up an injury against Manchester City and Klopp confirmed he would miss England duty.

“Trent will be out for England, that is clear. What he has, we don’t know, but he cannot play for England. He will not be the last and not the only one who Gareth will miss for this international break,” said a concerned Klopp.

Gomez’s importance

Jurgen Klopp mere weeks ago spoke about the importance of Gomez with Van Dijk’s absence.

“Joe in particular has had to step up in recent weeks and he has grasped it in such an impressive manner,” said the German coach.

“Joe is young in years but has a wealth of experience. He knows how important he is to us in general, but in this moment showing his best qualities on and off the pitch is so valuable.”

“I love that he sees what we need from him and that he relishes this opportunity.”

“Sacrificing for the team has never been more critical and in Joe Gomez and all of our players we have men who embrace it and inspire us all with their approach.”

Now Klopp will need to depend on alternatives to cover Gomez if he is out for the long-term. Nathaniel Phillips and Rhys Williams have both been given senior chances and will likely get more. If Fabinho and Matip remain fit, it is likely they would become the first choice partnership.
