Italian press flag up Carlos del Cerro Grande’s previous decisions against Juventus after denying Ronaldo’s penalty call

Was Ronaldo fouled?

In one of the first shops of the last 16 of the Champions League in 2021, Porto managed to secure a home victory against Juventus after scoring twice at the start of both halves against the Italian champions.

Poor defending and decision making were the reasons behind Juve’s conceding of the two goals but at the end of the match, in which the Italian club had clawed a goal back through Chiesa, saw a penalty shout from Cristiano Ronaldo go unanswered by referee Carlos del Cerro Grande.

The ball was played into the Portuguese international who cut the ball back before being apparently taken out by Zaidu Sanusi.

BT Sport and former referee Peter Walton said, “From the viewing angle I am seeing here, Ronaldo is already on his way down so that does not make it a foul but there is contact there. The VAR will check this even though the final whistle has blown,” he said. “But from my angle, I see this as Ronaldo falling over and not the foul bringing him down.”

Ronaldo was seen infuriated by the decision along with a number of his teammates.

Italian press highlight previous calls

In the wake of the defeat for Juventus, the Italian press this morning have highlighted the fact that the referee Carlos del Cerro Grande has before ruled out a penalty decision for Juventus going back to a 2019 game against Ajax.

Overall it was a very poor performance from Ronaldo and match ratings from Italy were around the 4-5 mark.

Andrea Pirlo blamed a lack of speed for the loss.

“We had to be more lucid in our reading of the game and switch it from one side to side more because they were compact between the lines and there was a lot of space out-wide. But, the ball movement was too slow. We weren’t quick enough in figuring out certain situations and this was the problem,” he said.

A 1-0 ‘home’ win would see Juventus progress on the away goals rule but a resolute Porto side will be doing everything they can to prevent victory.
