Ilkay Gundogan tells the story of when Jurgen Klopp shouted ‘Do whatever the f*** you want to do’

Gundogan’s Klopp story

Ilkay Gundogan sat down to to conduct an interview in which he explained the story where Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp, who was then in charge of Borussia Dortmund and therefore Gundogan himself, totally lost it with the German international over a missing text message.

Gundogan first provided the context of the story.

“It was in my second season at Dortmund. We were trailing in the Bundesliga, but we had a shot at the Champions League. The staff had this rule that if you felt bad before a training session, you had to report it to the team doctor. That way we would avoid injuries, and Jürgen would know that you might not be able to train,” he said.

“So one morning I woke up and felt my hamstring a bit. Did I have a muscle problem, or was I just tired? I couldn’t tell. “

“I probably should have texted the doctor. But I thought, ‘It’s probably gonna be alright.’”

“Like always, I came to the training ground an hour before the session started. And just to be sure, I asked the doctor to take a look at my hamstring.”

Doctor: “The muscle feels a bit tight. Why didn’t you text us?”

IG: “Don’t worry, I can train. It’s not a problem.”

Doctor: “I have to let the boss know. We can’t take any risks.”

Enter Jurgen Klopp

Gundogan explains that as soon as Klopp entered the room he knew he was in trouble.

JK: “What’s going on?”

IG: “I just feel my hamstring a bit, but it’s O.K. I can train.”

JK: “Why didn’t you text us? You know about the rule.”

IG: “Yeah, but I’m fine, honestly.”

“I was trying to find a way out of it, even though I knew I was wrong. Jürgen kept saying that we couldn’t take any risks. I kept saying that I could train,” said Gundogan right before Klopp saw the red mist.

JK: “DO WHATEVER THE F*** YOU WANT TO DO!”

“Then he slammed the door behind him,” said Gundogan.

But Gundogan explained that as soon as he went out to warm up, Klopp’s mood had already changed.

JK: “My friend, do you know why I was so angry?”

“I said nothing….” said Gundogan.

JK: “I just care about you. And I don’t want you to get injured.”

Gundogan went on to say that he accepted that this was just the open and honest person that Klopp was.

Gundogan now faces Klopp each season as an opponent. Playing under Pep Guardiola at Manchester City facing off against Liverpool and his former mentor.
