Zidane got it wrong
Real Madrid fell to their third defeat of the La Liga campaign and allowed Atletico Madrid plenty of breathing space in the race for the title. It was their second ‘home’ defeat of the season, although away from the Bernabeu with renovation works continuing.
Deportivo Alaves came out 2-1 winners with former Premier League forwards Lucas Perez and Joselu scoring the goals for the Basque side.
Former Real Madrid forward Pedja Mijatovic spoke to Spanish media and was scathing in his assessment of Zinedine Zidane’s tactics and the individual performances from some players.
On Zidane Mijatovic said, “He must fix it but this begins when you prepare for this match, knowing that Alavés has three players at the top who are its strengths.”
“So, if you have Lucas Vázquez, who was more advanced against Inter and played a good game, you can’t put him back as a winger today, because you have a Militao there.”
“I don’t know what happens with this kid because he doesn’t play either as a centre-back or as a full-back, and you come back with Lucas Vázquez, with Asensio in front, you know that Asensio can’t help him as much as any other player “
Real Madrid could drop to 5th in the table if Sevilla win their game in hand and could fall 9 points behind Atletico Madrid if the Rojiblancos win their additional fixture.
Zidane cant explain
Zidane was at a loss for words in the aftermath of the defeat to Alavés. The Frenchman had just pulled off an impressive win against Antonio Conte’s Inter Milan side but could not effectively navigate the significantly less threatening Alavés.
“I don’t have an explanation,” Zidane said. “Tonight we alternated good moments with bad moments. When they scored a goal after three minutes, things get very complicated for us.”
“The other day in Milan we played a good game and today…It is reality, our reality today. What we have to do is keep working, recover players and change the dynamics. We don’t have consistency.”
Eden Hazard also left the field of play with another injury having missed the start of the season with further problems.
“Eden, I think and I hope it was just a simple knock. That’s what he told us. That it’s just a knock, that it’s not muscular,” the French coach said.
Real’s next five fixtures are a lot more challenging than the Alavés side in which they just fell to. Pivotal Champions League clashes against Shakhtar Donetsk and Borussia Monchengladbach interleave La Liga ties against Sevilla, Atletico and Athletic Club.
