“I am concerned about the performance up front.” Ronald Koeman feeling the pressure at Barcelona

Problems continue

Despite Barcelona’s impressive victory in Turin, their league woes continued. The Blaugrana went to face a Deportivo Alaves side who themselves were having a poor La Liga campaign.

Both sides started the day on 7 points, however Alaves had played two games for than the Catalans. An early goal from the Basque side, Luis Rioja nipped in and stole the ball from backup keeper Neto after the Brazilian keeper was caught with the ball under his feet.

Alaves looked like they might be holding firm until Jota was given a second yellow for a high foot into Gerard Pique’s chest. Just a minute later, Antoine Griezmann levelled the score and Barcelona’s victory appeared an inevitability.

However, Alaves keeper Pacheco was in inspired form. Saving from Lionel Messi, Sergino Dest and Miralem Pjanic. The Basque side held on despite the man advantage and Barcelona were left lamenting another toothless performance.

‘Not a matter of attitude’

Koeman picked up on the issues his side had dealt with in the final third in the post match press conference.

“I am concerned about the performance up front,” he told a post match interview with Marca. “It is not a matter of attitude or concentration, but of having more success in front of goal.”

“It happened to us against Juventus and tonight too. In addition, we have given the goal to Alaves. But if we create so many chances, we cannot fail this much. If you create chances and only score one goal, it’s not good enough.”

With the quality of Griezmann, Messi, Ansu Fati and Ousmane Dembele you would imagine Barca would eventually be able to make their dominance and frequency of chance creation tell.

Barcelona go to face Dynamo Kyiv in the Champions League and then brace for the arrival Real Betis. The Andalusian club sit just a point above the Catalans and so a win for Koeman’s side is imperative.
