Everton’s European dream slipping away
Everton are a club with new ambitions, one of which is to become regular qualifiers for European competitions.
The previous summer window saw the side bring in significant quality in addition to their world-class coach Carlo Ancelotti who was appointed back in December of 2019.
James Rodriguez, Abdoulaye Doucoure, Ben Godfrey and Allan all came in to help the club in their push for the top 6.
However, one win in their last 5 has led to a stumble and their chances of Europe slipping away.
Aston Villa’s 2-1 victory at Goodison Park was a huge dent in the team’s mission.
Dominic Calvert-Lewin’s injury issues have cost the club along with that of a number of key players.
Richarlison has stepped up in some games but not consistently enough.
Depth is what is clearly missing from the squad which is likely to be addressed in the summer by Ancelotti.
Aguero on the agenda
One player who would have been rather extravagant to see tipped with a move to the Toffees is Sergio Aguero.
The Manchester City striker is leaving the club at the end of the season with his contract expiring.
A number of clubs including Inter Milan, Barcelona, Chelsea and Spurs have all supposedly registered interest in the player.
Everton would have thought to struggle in offering a wage packet of the level associated with the 32-year-old.
However, Rodriguez’s arrival last summer showed the weight of having Ancelotti at the helm of the club.
Reports suggest that the club will look to offset the difficulty in wages by providing a significant signing-on fee.
The one off payment would allow Everton to maintain their wage structure and invest more heavily at the start.
Aguero has however suffered with many injury problems this season and questions may be asked whether the Argentine can contribute to a level associated with the financial figures being thrown around.
For Everton, a signing of the calibre of Aguero however could help them solidify their place as competitors for the top 6 next season.
