Haaland reportedly out for the rest of the year for Dortmund with Jadon Sancho slipping to the bench

Haaland and Sancho out

Erling Haaland and Jadon Sancho were both absent from the Borussia Dortmund starting line-up as the German side prepared for their pivotal clash against Lazio.

Lucien Favre has fielded Marco Reus in a starting central role with Giovanni Reyna and Thorgan Hazard on the flanks.

A win for Dortmund would guarantee top spot in the group. BVB currently have 9 points after 4 matches having lost to the Italian side in the third game week. Were Lazio to lose, they would still be in danger failing to qualify for the knockout rounds with Club Brugge still to play on the final day of the season.

The German club are currently 4th in La Liga and will be fearful of losing any key players for a significant period. Bayer Leverkusen, RB Leipzig and Bayern Munich are all within four points of each other as the race for the title hots up in the early season period.

Jan Aage Fjortoft has reported that Haaland could be out for the rest of the year.

Favre loses players

Lucien Favre spoke to the press in the week about the possible injury concerns he had and there was no mention of Haaland and Sancho.

“I don’t know. I have to speak to the doc. We’ll probably have to wait until tomorrow or the day after tomorrow until he can do an MRI. But I hope it’s not that bad,” said the French coach when asked about the fitness of Belgian full-back Thomas Meunier.

The Belgian was not named in the squad ahead of the game against the Italian club.

However, there was good news to see Raphael Guerreiro in the starting eleven to face Lazio. Favre had been coy on the possibility of the Portugal international’s inclusion for the clash.

“At the moment I have no idea. It is too early to say something,” said the former Nice coach ahead of the midweek bout. Thankfully the injury was not as bad as first feared.
