Frank Lampard tempers Chelsea expectations amid calls for Premier League title challenge

Chelsea boss Frank Lampard has warned all associated with the club against ‘getting ahead of themselves’, ahead of the 2020/21 campaign.

Ongoings at Stamford Bridge have of course proven one of the talking points of world football over recent weeks.

This comes with the Blues currently in the midst of a remarkable recruitment drive.

On the back of a pair of transfer windows without a single signing, Chelsea have already secured 5 high-profile additions ahead of the new season.

After clinching deals for both Hakim Ziyech and Timo Werner before the summer window had even officially opened, the last week has since seen all of Ben Chilwell, Malang Sarr and Thiago Silva follow suit.

And Roman Abramovich appears far from ready to rest on his laurels, with Bayer Leverkusen sensation Kai Havertz, Rennes shot-stopper Edouard Mendy and West Ham standout Declan Rice also rumoured to be firmly in the sights of the capital giants.

‘Need to be careful’

As such, as the new campaign inches closer to commencement, excitement, and in turn, expectation, has begun to mount at Stamford Bridge.

Chelsea are evidently building towards a side capable of challenging Liverpool and Manchester City for Premier League supremacy, on the back of a pair of seasons some way off the English top-flight’s title pace.

One individual wary of the Blues allowing the current hype surrounding the club to create unrealistic expectations, however, is Frank Lampard.

Speaking in an interview with Chelsea’s official website, the English tactician was drawn on the club’s impressive summer recruitment thus far.

Lampard, though, whilst ‘excited’ by the latest batch of recruits in southwest London, warned fans against ‘getting too far ahead of ourselves’:

‘We have an idea to try to add to improve, as you should do at a club of our level.’

‘We know that has not been absolutely possible for us, and we knew the ban and all this talk, and it was important for me to try to improve the squad and with the players that we are bringing in.’

‘It feels that way, but we need to be careful of getting too far ahead of ourselves because we need to give time to players to come in and adapt to the way I want us to play and to their team-mates.’

‘But I think the moves we are making our positive, so I am excited and then it is up to us to get our heads down and work very hard.’
