Frank Lampard outlines ‘next challenge’ for Chelsea’s Tammy Abraham

Rennes vs Chelsea

Chelsea are set to return to European action later today.

Frank Lampard and co. will make the trip to France, aiming to continue their fine run of form.

The Blues are unbeaten in their last nine outings across all competitions, shipping just one goal in their last seven.

Such fine form has seen the Londoners move to top spot in Champions League Group E, though Sevilla only sit behind Lampard’s men on goal difference.

As such, Chelsea will no doubt be desperate to secure their latest win against Rennes in just over 24 hours.

The Pensioners saw off the French outfit by three goals to nil in their last meeting at the beginning of November.

Lampard on Abraham

Ahead of the Rennes tie, Frank Lampard has been discussing Tammy Abraham.

With the likes of Timo Werner, Kai Havertz and Hakim Ziyech arriving over the summer, question marks over Abraham’s starting spot did appear.

However, in recent weeks, the hitman has actually been one of Chelsea’s brighter sparks.

Abraham has now scored two and assisted one in his last three league outings, with his linkup play with Werner also improving.

Now, ahead of the Rennes clash, when speaking about Tammy, Lampard has stated that the forward’s next challenge is to remain consistent:

“The whole point of bringing in players like Timo is not only bringing in quality, but to lift others around him, by linking up on the pitch or by squad competition.

“I have more options in forward areas and I need good reactions. Tammy’s shown a brilliant reaction and he needs to be on that edge. All the young players need to be on edge daily to push themselves to try and play in this team.

“When they play like Tammy is at the moment, he starts making my decisions easier because he’s playing so well.

“Linking up with people like Timo will obviously help, but first and foremost, it always has to be about the player himself. Tammy should take credit for his start and understand that the next challenge is to remain consistent.”
