Frank Lampard confirms Chelsea trio likely to miss Newcastle clash

Chelsea boss Frank Lampard this afternoon provided a team news update on his squad, ahead of the club’s meeting with Newcastle.

Pensioners firing on all cylinders

The Blues are set to return to action on Saturday afternoon, with a trip to St. James’ Park.

Chelsea will of course head into proceedings hoping to carry on from where the club left off prior to the international break.

Lampard’s men have not fallen to defeat since the back end of September, a run of 8 outings across all competitions.

This includes a stretch of 4 consecutive wins, and clean sheets in 5 of their last 6 fixtures.

Newcastle, on the other hand, will enter tomorrow’s clash having notched just a solitary win from their last 4, and on the back of a 2-0 defeat in their last outing prior to the break.

Blues battered

As such, on paper at least, Saturday’s Tyneside showdown appears to represent what should come as a straightforward victory for Chelsea.

The issue for the Blues, however, is that they, unlike Newcastle, had an absolute host of players called up to represent their respective countries over the course of the last couple of weeks.

And, as revealed by Frank Lampard this afternoon, not all have returned in perfect health.

Speaking in a press conference a short time ago, the Chelsea boss was asked for the latest on the fitness of his squad.

First, Lampard confirmed that Christian Pulisic, who actually carried a hamstring problem into the latest round of internationals, will not be fit to feature at St. James’ Park.

Kai Havertz, meanwhile, has only recently returned to an individualised training programme, after testing positive for Covid-19. As such, the German may not be considered for Saturday, as he continues to work towards full fitness.

Fellow summer signing Thiago Silva is also viewed as altogether unlikely to feature versus Newcastle, having only returned to the UK from a testing week with Brazil earlier today:

The news on Ben Chilwell, who was forced off during England’s meeting with Belgium last weekend, was more positive, though, with Lampard hopeful that the stopper will be available for selection:
