FPL implications: Ole Gunnar Solskjaer on rotating Harry Maguire & Man United squad for Triple Gameweek

Manchester United boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has spoken out over his plans to rotate over the coming weeks, amid a hectic end of season schedule.

Reds march on

Solskjaer and co. were of course back in action last night.

The Red Devils made the trip to the Stadio Olimpico, aiming to book their spot in the final of the Europa League.

United headed into proceedings boasting a hefty advantage, having downed AS Roma by six goals to two in Manchester last week.

In turn, it came as little surprise when it was indeed the visitors who got the job done – albeit in a 3-2 defeat – to secure a spot in the first of two European showpiece occasions to play out later this month.

Edinson Cavani again proved the star of the show for United, notching a brace to take his tally for the tie to an impressive four goals:

Maguire to rest

United’s endeavours on the continent, however, have left little time for celebration.

This comes with the Reds preparing for a frankly ridiculous fixture pile-up over the coming week.

First, the Manchester giants will make the trip to Villa Park on Sunday afternoon. This will then be followed by a Premier League meeting with high-flying Leicester on Tuesday, and, incredibly, a showdown with Liverpool just 48 hours later.

The hectic nature of the schedule comes after the Premier League were forced to reschedule the showdown between United and Liverpool, on the back of fan protests at Old Trafford last weekend.

In turn, it came as little surprise when Ole Gunnar Solskjaer was drawn on the subject of his squad’s wellbeing during a press conference this afternoon.

The Red Devils boss will of course be faced with a difficult task in navigating the week ahead, in attempting to find a balance between keeping his players fit, and maintaining competitiveness.

‘It’s another challenge for us. And please, you can see I’m not happy with it but I’m not sulking. It’s one of those things that I know my players will take head on and we as a group will be stronger for it when we come out of it’, Solskjaer explained.

‘Two games in three days is difficult but you can accept that we do that at Christmas. Two games in three days after a long season, with all the games we’ve had, even more difficult.’

‘Three games in five days, very very difficult, almost impossible. Four games in eight, it is impossible. But I think you all know me, I hope you do anyway. We’ll take the challenge head on.’

From here, though, the Norwegian hinted directly at upcoming player rotation.

After revealing his concern regarding a potential injury pile-up, Solskjaer singled out Harry Maguire in particular as one player who looks set to be afforded some well-earned rest over the coming week:

‘I just keep my fingers crossed that nobody gets injured. That’s going to be my biggest concern, injuries. Harry Maguire has played every minute for us in the Premier League since he came. I don’t think that’s possible now. That’s another record or another stat he could have been very proud of but I can’t really see that happening now.’

For those Fantasy Football managers who were planning on filling their squad with Manchester United stars ahead of a rare triple gameweek, proceed with caution…

A number of surprise selection decisions are likely on the horizon at Old Trafford.
