Former Arsenal goalkeeper Jens Lehmann removed from Hertha board after referring to Dennis Aogo as ‘token black guy’ in WhatsApp message

Jens Lehmann dismissed from Hertha board following WhatsApp message

Former Arsenal and German goalkeeper Jens Lehmann has been dismissed as an advisor to Bundesliga outfit Hertha Berlin’s supervisory board following WhatsApp comments Lehmann made about former German national team player Dennis Aogo, who has recently been working as a pundit for Sky DE’s Champions League coverage.

The message in question saw the former Arsenal keeper write:

“is Dennis your token black guy?”

Lehmann seemingly accidentally sent the message in question to Aogo by accident.

Aogo then screenshotted the message and posted it to his Instagram story with the caption:

“Wow, seriously? Clearly this message was not intended for me.”

Lehmann took to Twitter on Wednesday morning to address the matter:

“In a private message from my cell phone to Dennis Aogo, an impression was created for which I apologized in conversation with Dennis. As a former national player he is very knowledgeable and has a great presence and brings odds at Sky.”

Hertha Berlin president Werner Gegenbauer has also spoken out against Lehnmann’s comments:
