Everton ‘have made contact’ with Man United over Sergio Romero

The latest word stemming from the English media this evening suggests that Everton have begun working towards the potential signing of Manchester United goalkeeper Sergio Romero.

Reds’ goalkeeping situation

Argentine international Romero of course acted as the backup to David de Gea at Old Trafford for the last 5 seasons.

During this time, the 33-year-old went on to establish himself as, in the eyes of many, the most reliable no.2 in the English top-flight.

Romero’s future, however, was thrown up in the air this past summer.

After Dean Henderson’s loan stint with Sheffield United came to an end, the highly-regarded shot-stopper returned to Manchester, to battle it out with David de Gea for starting duties over the course of the season ahead.

This, in turn, has of course seen Romero relegated to 3rd-choice, an unfathomable situation for a player of the former Sampdoria man’s talents.

Goodison bound?

As such, the most likely scenario for Romero now appears to be an Old Trafford exit.

And, as per the latest speculation doing the rounds in the English media on Thursday, one potential landing spot for the South American appears to be Everton.

The news comes courtesy of reliable pair Paul Hirst and Paul Joyce of The Times.

It is claimed that, though Everton are yet to open discussions with Manchester United, they have made initial contact with Romero’s intermediaries, over the possibility of a transfer.

This comes with the Toffees eager to put pressure on the under-fire Jordan Pickford, amid a hit-and-miss long-term spell of form on the part of the English international.

Significantly, it is also noted that Romero himself ‘is interested’ in making the move to Merseyside.
