Eddie Howe and Frank Lampard amongst early names linked to vacant Celtic job

Who will replace Lennon

Neil Lennon resigned today as Celtic manager after seeing his side lose 1-0 to Ross County on the weekend and having been under pressure for some time.

Steven Gerrard’s Rangers are romping to the title and despite insisting he wouldn’t quit, Lennon did just that today as the curtain came down on his second reign at Celtic Park. He took over in November 2019, when Brendon Rodgers left to join Leicester City.

He will be replaced in the interim by his assistant John Kennedy.

As is always the case, no sooner is the door closed for one manager the rumours begin about who will replace him. Celtic is of course a massive club and the names being linked this afternoon certainly reflect that.

The likes of former Bournemouth manager Eddie Howe, current Scotland manager Steve Clarke, Belgium boss Roberto Martinez, ex Chelsea manager Frank Lampard and currently available Rafa Benitez all feature amongst the bookies favourites so far as does John Kennedy.

There will no doubt be much speculation over the coming days as to who will be next in the hot seat.

Speaking ahead of his side’s Europa League tie with Royal Antwerp tomorrow, Steven Gerrard said the following on Lennon’s exit.

“I can’t say I am surprised because of obviously what’s been going on there.

” But I take no personal satisfaction from seeing that news (happen) to Neil or any other fellow manager that happens to. So I wish him well for the future.”

“I only really found out about it this morning, but obviously I am focused on tomorrow’s game.”
