Diego Simeone reportedly calls Torreira / Partey deal could become more likely with Atletico’s Uruguayan interest

Departure looms

Lucas Torreira has been mooted to leave Arsenal for the majority of the transfer window.

Italian clubs have been circling, with the likes of Torino, AC Milan and Fiorentina having all expressed an interest in bringing in the Uruguayan midfielder.

Arsenal, meanwhile, are in desperate need of transfer funds so that they can reinvest. Mikel Arteta’s press conference earlier today again highlighted this fact.

The Spaniard said: “It is clear at the moment that it has to go both ways and in order to achieve that we still have some time but we are pretty clear in what we are trying to do.”

Arteta also went on to add that: “At the moment, I’m not expecting anyone to leave very shortly. That’s where I am.”

But the most recent news regarding Torreira may well have come at the perfect time. Arsenal have supposedly been reluctant to agree to proposed loan deals from the aforementioned Italian clubs. The latest rumoured interest in his signature could therefore prove pivotal to Arsenal’s summer.

Partey time?

Atletico Madrid are now said to be keen on Torreira.

Uruguayan media sources claim that the midfielder was contacted by Atleti coach Diego Simeone.

Immediately, Arsenal’s long-term interest in Thomas Partey is brought to mind. If Atletico want Lucas Torreira, then the logical step for the Gunners would be to use the Uruguayan in negotiations for Partey.

Thomas Partey’s release clause stands at £45 million, and the Spanish club have shown no interest in listening to offers below that figure. With the knowledge that Diego Simeone is an admirer of Torreira in mind, it could therefore be possible for a player-plus-cash deal to occur.

With the window closing in mere weeks, both clubs will need to move quickly to orchestrate this complicated transfer.
