Derby could still be relegated after EFL win Financial Fair Play appeal, Wycombe consider legal action

EFL win Derby FFP breach appeal

Derby County will be very concerned after an appeal by the EFL over breaches by the club of Financial Fair Play regulations was successful.

A statement from Derby back in September of last year said that they were ‘surprised’ and ‘disappointed’ by the league’s decision to appeal after an independent disciplinary commission had cleared the club.

However, it now appears that the EFL were right to as they have supposedly won the appeal.

The Telegraph’s John Percy have said that 10 days ago they were threatened by the club with legal action should they print anything regarding the story which is now coming to light.

Wycombe seeking legal action

Should this upheld, sanctions could come the way of Derby in the form of a points deduction.

This would be significant seeing as the Rams managed to survive the drop by a single point with Wycombe Wanderers finishing in 22nd in the table.

Should Derby face such a points sanction, Wycombe could find themselves remaining in the division.

It is therefore unsurprising that The Athletic understand Wycombe are considering legal action and will get advice on the situation.

“We have an obligation to our fans, players and coaches to look at everything and go from there,” said Wycombe owner Rob Couhig.

“We’re probably going to get advice, whether it’s from a QC or whether it’s from people in the EFL as to exactly what the status is and what the possible ramifications are.

“This is a situation where the EFL made a determination that Derby violated the rules of financial fair play and there should have been a penalty. Then a panel reversed that, so they are awaiting some further adjudication.”

The EFL refused to comment on the situation however.

Derby now face a nervous wait to find out their fate but this will be a story to keep an eye on.
