Christian Eriksen in possible shock return to North London with Arsenal as Gunners propose Granit Xhaka swap with Inter Milan

Xhaka to go?

Arsenal’s lack of central creativity and creativity in general has been the Achilles heel of the Gunners this season. Having scored very few goals due to a lack of chances and chance conversion, Mikel Arteta’s side are languishing in the bottom half of the Premier League table.

With January fast approaching, possible deals to secure reinforcement and add to Arteta’s options are likely on the Spaniard’s agenda. The window itself can often throw up some strange situations and if recent reports are to be believed a fresh shock could be in store.

Reports have suggested that Christian Eriksen could leave Inter Milan in search of more regular game time. Not at all surprising, however it is the supposed destination that will be to the dislike of the Spurs half of north London. Arsenal are being tipped to propose a possible swap deal to include Swiss midfielder Granit Xhaka.

Xhaka’s time at Arsenal has been a rollercoaster, from the vitriolic departure against Crystal Palace under Unai Emery to becoming an integral part of Arteta’s cup winning side.

However, with Thomas Partey at the club, Mohammed Elneny’s impressive return, Dani Ceballos’ renaissance under Arteta and the enigmatic Ainsley Maitland-Niles looking for a midfielder future the Gunners are well-stocked and in a position to allow Xhaka’s departure.

Eriksen open to leaving

Christian Eriksen has not been coy about his desires to play and even leave if the opportunity arises. Since joining Inter less than a year ago in the previous winter window, the Dane has struggled to nail down a regular spot in Antonio Conte’s team.

Having been one of the stars of the Premier League with Spurs, Eriksen was reluctant to sign a new deal and left for Inter Milan in search of a new challenge. It appears the challenge may have been a step too far as the former Chelsea coach has preferred other options to the Danish international.

“This isn’t what I dreamed of,” Eriksen said to TV2. “All players want to play as much as possible, but the coach decides who gets to go on the pitch.”

“It is a strange situation, as the fans want to see me playing more and so would I, but the coach has different ideas and as a player I have to respect that.”

Whilst the logistics seem simple from an Arsenal perspective to want a creative midfielder of the quality of Eriksen, the social aspects for the Dane are much trickier. Although not as direct, the move would represent a symbolic recreation of Sol Campbell’s arrival at Arsenal. Even though Eriksen would arrive via Italy, the hatred from the Tottenham Hotspur supporters will no doubt be no less severe.
