Chelsea reportedly looking to extend Thiago Silva’s contract to 2022

Chelsea’s defensive record

Chelsea, of course, had a pretty dismal defensive record last term.

The Blues finished the 2019/20 campaign in possession of the worst defence across the then top-10 Premier League sides.

This season, though, Frank Lampard has most certainly turned his side’s fortunes around.

Chelsea currently boast the joint second-best defense in the English top-flight.

They have also conceded just two goals in their last eight outings across all competitions.

Thiago Silva set for new deal?

One of the main reasons behind Chelsea’s defensive rebirth is, of course, their new additions at the back.

Edouard Mendy and Thiago Silva’s impact in particular has been pretty clear.

The African, unlike Kepa, exudes confidence which has a clear impact on the players in front of him.

Meanwhile, Thiago Silva’s years of experience and knowledge has already had clear benefits for Chelsea.

Reece James even spoke recently about how the Brazilian has helped him out:

“Thiago has brought a lot of experience. I have played alongside him a few times now. He has helped me a lot.

“You can see straight away why he has been one of the best in the world. He constantly talks to me throughout games, helping me in my positioning, directing me and making sure he is talking to me before, during and after games. It all adds up and improves performances.”

And now Silva looks set to be rewarded for his fine start with a contract extension.

When signing for Chelsea back in August, Silva agreed to a one-year deal with the option of a further year.

And according to a recent report from Italy, Chelsea are now looking to extend the stopper’s deal until 2022:
