Chelsea make improved bid of €20 million for Rennes goalkeeper Edouard Mendy

Chelsea’s shaky defence

One of Chelsea’s biggest problem areas in 2019/20 was, of course, their defensive record.

When the curtain fell on the latest Premier League season, the Blues possessed the worst defence of the top 10 clubs.

And whilst one man can’t really be solely to blame for said record, Kepa’s performances really didn’t help.

Chelsea signed Kepa in the summer of 2018 for £71m, making the Spaniard the most expensive goalkeeper in world football.

The shot-stopper’s debut season in England wasn’t terrible, but he was by no means the best goalkeeper in the Premier League.

Then, this past campaign, Kepa’s form took a complete nosedive.

The 25-year-old was so poor, in fact, that Frank Lampard opted to drop him during two separate spells, the second of which saw Willy Caballero handed a starting berth in several league games, the FA Cup final and the Blues’ Champions League clash with Bayern Munich.

Kepa is also believed to have finished the Premier League season with the worst save percentage of any goalkeeper.

Such poor form has, understandably, led to speculation that Frank Lampard wants to move Kepa on this summer, or at least sign another keeper as competition.

Chelsea bid for Mendy

One man who appears to have piqued the interest of those in a position of power at Stamford Bridge is Rennes goalkeeper, Edouard Mendy.

The 28-year-old joined Rennes last summer for just over £3.5m and went on to have a superb debut campaign.

Granted, the 2019/20 Ligue 1 season was cut short, but Mendy still played a key role in Rennes boasting the joint-best defensive record in the French top-flight last term, along with PSG.

Such exploits have seemingly impressed Chelsea with it claimed earlier this week that the Londoners had a bid worth £15m rejected by Rennes for the Frenchman.

The Blues already look to have come back in with a fresh offer for the shot-stopper though.

According to a recent report from Goal, Chelsea have made an improved bid of €20m (around £18m) for Mendy.
