Brentford’s Benrahma reportedly close to West Ham transfer / Former Championship stars are shining bright in the top-tier

Still there?

It is surprising that Said Benrahma remains a Brentford player at this stage. The Algerian winger was one of the most highly-rated players in the Championship last season.

The Bees pushed for promotion, reaching the play-off final. However, they stuttered and Fulham took the prize and Brentford were left wondering what could have been. One of the answers would have certainly been the ability to hang on to their top players.

Ollie Watkins has already moved on to Aston Villa in a multi-million pound deal. The Championship quality bleeding into the top-tier with a hatrick for Watkins against league champions Liverpool.

Unsurprisingly, clubs have now begun to make their moves on other Championship talent before the window closes and Benrahma appears top of the list. 17 goals and 9 assists for the Bees mean its unsurprising the figures being touted for the wide-man.

Hammered home

The club reportedly leading the chase is that of West Ham United. The figure is being touted at the £30 million mark. Just a third less than the money Arsenal paid for Atletico Madrid’s Thomas Partey.

It is unsurprising to see West Ham switch transfer tactics from previous seasons after the success of Jared Bowen. Huge amounts have been spent on talent from the continent with the likes of Felipe Anderson, Sebastian Haller and Andriy Yarmolenko joining.

The trio’s total cost was bordering on the £100 million mark. Yet none have been the shining lights for the Hammers. Instead it has been their stars from the Championship stealing the show.

Michail Antonio, signed from Nottingham Forest, and Bowen, signed from Hull City, have had a stellar start to the campaign.

It should be said that Pablo Fornals, signed from Villarreal, has performed well on the left but the signing of Benrahma would likely push Fornals into a more central attacking role. Meaning David Moyes would need to revert to a back four or omit Fornals entirely.

However Moyes chooses to setup, the Hammers’ options with Benrahma are extremely exciting.
